About UsWe are an independent, progressive high school located in downtown Atlanta. At The LIFE School, students are co-owners of their education, empowered to investigate their curiosities and take action in the world.
To us, education is not about defining a student’s path for him, but rather providing a structured freedom where students can each find their own way in life. We focus on developing the mindset and processes (e.g. thinking critically, taking care of yourself, being curious) that will allow students to not just get into college or have a career, but to manage their whole lives - at home, in the community, and at work/school. We have begun the 2-year accreditation process through SACS/AdvancEd. |
We deeply believe that...
1. Adolescence is preparation for adulthood
Adolescence marks the transition from childhood to adulthood. Students are deciding who they are, who they will be as adults, and what impact they want to have on the world. Our role as LIFE coaches is to support them in this process and ensure that their work furthers them in this period of discovery.
2. Knowledge is inherently interconnected
“The great issues of our times have to do in one way or another with our failure to see things in their entirety. That failure occurs when minds are taught to think in boxes and not taught to transcend those boxes or to question overly much how they fit with other boxes” (Distinguished Professor David Orr). Life in the 21st century demands that we engage students in how the disciplines work together to solve personal and societal problems. It is no longer enough to present knowledge in subject-based silos, so we focus student work primarily on interdisciplinary projects.
3. Diversity breeds innovation
Innovative ideas don’t spontaneously occur in a vacuum. They develop over time in spaces where they can bounce off of other ideas, merging and re-forming as they interact. In order to create a space where innovation can occur, we bring together students and LIFE coaches with diverse backgrounds and passions, empowering them to learn from one another’s varied perspectives and skillsets, wrestle with the complexity of nuance, and expand their worldviews.
