Some of us believe that education is something we get. The pursuit of information is centered on information itself, not on the person learning, but on the things to be learned. And there are people like Mikala Streeter, an educator who knows that education and learning are not these boxed things that we should fit ourselves into. And more than that, she makes sure young people in Atlanta get the benefits of a learner-centered approach to exploring passions and building skills.
Mikala Streeter, founder and principal of The LIFE School (thelifeschool.co) in Atlanta, Georgia, talks about her ambitious new progressive school and the challenges of exposing teenagers to new areas of knowledge while also promoting interest-led learning. We focus on math specifically as an area that teenagers resist when taught directly, but they become receptive to when related to their interests. For anyone wondering how to balance self-directed learning, educator-facilitated learning, and college prep, The LIFE School provides an inspiring model.

During our interview with Mikala Streeter, Founder, Principal, and Lead Teacher of The LIFE School, we explored:
- how The Life School provides an alternative environment to interrupt school pushout, the school-to-prison pipeline, and the need for more African American children being home-schooled because of the toxic educational climate;
- the impact of positive adults on campuses;
- the role of teachers and educators in parenting and/or nurturing children through education;
- how to discover the #blerd (Black Nerd) in every student;
- tips for talking to your child about their vision of education for themselves.
"What else can high school look like?" Mikala Streeter wondered about that question as her career expanded from the computer science industry into teaching young people and nurturing their passions. Mikala is Principal and Lead Teacher at the LIFE School, an independent high school that she founded in Atlanta, Georgia. She talks about the philosophy of The LIFE School, which focuses on curiosity, real-world work, and breaking barriers among disciplines. As an MIT grad, she also highlights how her students integrate design thinking into their interdisciplinary self-directed projects.
